CHAPTER 6

Crush

S hane emerged hangover free, and realized she was starving. “Want to have lunch?” she asked Lila as they headed out.

Lila checked her watch. "I'd love to, but I have a showing." Shane knew she was lucky to have had this much time with Lila on the weekend, so she did not push it.

"How about we pick up lunch, and I'll drop you off at home. Then at least you don't have to cook."

“You had me at the no cooking part.”

Shane slid her phone out of her purse, and saw she had a message from Ryan.

Fingers moving quickly, she found their last text exchange.

Sorry I missed you. With Lila, she texted.

He was there and typing back — morning sunshine.

She smiled at the simple but sweet message. Lila’s chatter faded to the background as she absentmindedly answered her friend with vague ‘yeses’ and hums.

Can’t wait to see you, she sent the message, eagerly waiting for his response.

Me too.

Did you have fun last night?

Shane felt the color rise to her cheeks. You know I did.

What are you doing now?

Lunch with Lila.

You hungry, little girl?

Shane felt her blush intensify. Lila noticed the disconnect with her friend and snapped her fingers in front of Shane’s face. “Shane. Hello? You talking to Ryan?”

Shane laughed. “Yes.” She answered both of them at once, typing the response to Ryan.

Me too. texted Ryan.

“What is he saying?” Lila asked, curious, and demanding all at once.

“Girl he’s being sexy. Give me just a minute.”

Tell Lila hello for me, Ryan’s latest text read. He knew the playing field. Lila would not want to share Shane’s attention, and he would not ask her to.

“He says hello," Shane reported dutifully.

Lila was pleased to be included. Ironically, being involved in the conversation brought her chatter to a halt. She waited for Shane to respond. “Tell that boy hello.”

Shane did. She was now the order taker on the third-party conversation.

Talk to Lila. Pick you up at six.

See you at six. Shane locked her phone after sending that last text.

“What’d he say?” Lila asked as Shane shoved her phone into the side pocket of her purse.

“That he’d pick me up at six.”

Lila laughed. "The way you look, I thought he was getting frisky. "

Shane laughed. “He is.” She shook her head. “He’s always getting frisky.”

They picked up salads and two tall lemonades. As Lila made her way through the winding side streets to Shane’s apartment, the summer heat warmed the car through the windows and coaxed her toward a nap.

Lila guided the car into a spot by the front door and leaned over for a hug. “Have a wonderful time. I can’t wait to hear all about it.” Shane squeezed her back. “Thank you for today. I had so much fun.”

“Me too. Love you, girl.”

“Love you too. Next time is on me.” Lila waved her away.

Shane slipped out of the car and into the summer heat. It was hot enough to make it hard to breathe. She quickened her steps, wanting to be inside the dark and cool apartment.
